A Wild Beach Protected Down to the Last Shell

Botany Bay protects an undeveloped beach, maritime forest, wetlands, wildlife habitat, and cultural sites on Edisto Island. Its beauty comes with a clear rule: experience the place, but leave every natural and historic object where it belongs.

Botany Bay Heritage Preserve in Context

Botany Bay is managed primarily for wildlife, research, and cultural preservation rather than as a heavily developed recreation park. It belongs to the ACE Basin, one of the Atlantic coast’s major estuarine landscapes.

02

What Makes It Distinct

Visitors can follow a 6.5-mile driving and cycling tour and walk about a half mile toward the beach when tides allow. More than 230 bird species have been documented, and historic resources share the preserve with marsh and maritime forest.

03

Following the R&M Album

Ron and Michelle photographed the property across visits from 2019 through 2022. The extended album reveals changing light, tides, trees, and shoreline details while keeping the experience rooted in the preserve’s rules.

04

Why This Story Belongs

Botany Bay belongs because conservation changes how the adventure is experienced. Shells, driftwood, fossils, artifacts, plants, and animals stay in place so the next visitor can encounter the same protected landscape.
