An Artist’s Winter Home Built Beside the Atlantic
Atalaya is unlike any other building on the South Carolina coast. Low brick walls, green ironwork, courtyards, studios, animal spaces, and Moorish-inspired details reveal a home designed around the lives and work of Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington.
A Castle Without a Grand Facade
Atalaya reveals itself horizontally. The long brick exterior and repeating green iron windows feel restrained from a distance, while chimneys and palms rise beyond the walls. The building does not depend on a single front-door view; it asks visitors to follow its edges and discover the plan gradually.
Designed Around Two Creative Lives
Archer Huntington was a scholar of Spanish culture, and the winter home reflects Moorish architecture from the Spanish Mediterranean coast. For Anna Hyatt Huntington, a world-renowned sculptor, Atalaya also had to function as a serious workplace. Home, studio, and inspiration were built into the same plan.
Courtyards, Studios, and Animals
Inside the walls, courtyards bring light and air into the center of the home. Anna’s indoor and outdoor studios, kennels, stables, and bear pens show how closely her art depended on observing living animals. These practical spaces make the building’s history feel personal and specific.
The Huntington Connection
Atalaya, Huntington Beach State Park, and Brookgreen Gardens form one connected Lowcountry legacy. The alligator story shows the living landscape outside the home; this page turns inward to the architecture and artistic life that also shaped the property. They are separate adventures that deepen one another without repeating the same story.
