Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge in Context

Cape Romain was established in 1932 to protect migratory waterfowl and other birds. Today the refuge covers more than 66,000 acres across 22 miles of coast, with roughly 29,000 acres designated wilderness.

02

What Makes It Distinct

The refuge supports more than 293 bird species, important loggerhead sea turtle nesting beaches, maritime forest, estuaries, and two nineteenth-century lighthouses. Islands and marshes are accessible only by boat.

Following the R&M Album

Ron and Michelle’s March 2021 album records a coastal system defined by distance and water. Even a mainland gateway view carries the scale of the refuge beyond it.

04

Why This Story Belongs

Cape Romain belongs because conservation, wildlife, maritime history, and boat travel meet in one landscape that remains deliberately less developed than the coast around it.

Coastal Wilderness Connection
