A Final-Winter Stand Along the Salkehatchie

Rivers Bridge preserves earthen defenses and river terrain from one of the last major Civil War actions in South Carolina. The quiet woods make the scale of the February 1865 battle easier to absorb.

Battle of Rivers Bridge State Historic Site in Context

On February 2 and 3, 1865, about 1,200 Confederate soldiers used the difficult Salkehatchie River terrain and prepared earthworks in an effort to slow General William T. Sherman’s advance across South Carolina.

02

What Makes It Distinct

The landscape mattered as much as the numbers. Swamp, river crossings, and fortified positions shaped the fighting, and surviving earthworks still help visitors understand why the site was considered so defensible.

Following the R&M Album

Ron and Michelle’s March 2021 photographs follow a battlefield that has returned to quiet forest. Markers and traces in the land do the interpretive work without overwhelming the place.

Why This Story Belongs

Rivers Bridge belongs as a separate history story because its Civil War setting, river terrain, and surviving fortifications are distinct from the Revolutionary War chapter at Musgrove Mill.
