A Ferry Ride Into an Island Without Bridges

Bald Head Island sits where the Cape Fear River meets the Atlantic, reached by passenger ferry and explored at a slower pace. Maritime forest, marsh, beach, and Old Baldy make the arrival feel like the start of a complete island story.

Bald Head Island in Context

Bald Head Island begins with water. There is no road bridge from the mainland; the passenger ferry from Southport carries visitors across the Cape Fear River and makes the transition from ordinary travel to island time unmistakable.

02

What Makes It Distinct

The island’s landscape is unusually varied. Beach, salt marsh, maritime forest, and neighborhoods share roughly 12,000 acres, with most of that land preserved. Old Baldy, completed in 1817, adds a historic landmark to the natural setting.

Following the R&M Album

Ron and Michelle’s November 2020 photographs preserve the island as a journey rather than a single stop: the approach, the paths, the lighthouse, and the coastal views all belong to the same day.

Why This Story Belongs

Bald Head Island expands R&M Adventures beyond a roadside destination. The ferry crossing and car-free atmosphere make the travel itself part of the memory.

Cape Fear Island Connection

A Ferry Ride Into an Island Without Bridges

The island lies about two miles across the Cape Fear River from Southport at the southernmost of North Carolina’s cape islands.
