A Fortress at the Harbor Entrance
Castillo San Felipe del Morro stands on a high promontory above the entrance to San Juan Bay. Construction began in 1539, and Spanish engineers expanded the fortification over generations. Seen from a ship, El Morro still explains why this harbor mattered: the walls, lighthouse, and commanding position were designed around the water.
Inside the Walled City
Past the harbor defenses, Old San Juan becomes a walking story. Blue-toned cobblestones, colorful facades, shaded plazas, balconies, churches, and narrow streets reward an unhurried pace. Two Forts, One Defensive System
El Morro protected the bay entrance while Castillo San Cristóbal guarded the city from a land attack. Together with surviving walls, bastions, powder houses, the San Juan Gate, and Fort San Juan de la Cruz across the water, they form the San Juan National Historic Site and reveal the scale of the defensive system built around this strategic Caribbean port.
From Daylight to Harbor Lights
The view changes with every hour. In daylight, stone walls, green lawns, blue water, and bright streets reveal the city’s details. After sunset, the shoreline becomes a ribbon of light.
