A Hudson River City Shaped by History and Reinvention

Newburgh stands on the west bank of the Hudson River in southeastern New York. Its waterfront, Revolutionary history, industrial past, and location near the Hudson Highlands give visitors several different stories to explore in one compact area.

On the Hudson River

Newburgh rises above the Hudson River with views toward Beacon and the surrounding highlands. The river shaped the city’s transportation, waterfront industry, architecture, and connection to the wider Hudson Valley.

Washington’s Longest Wartime Headquarters

General George Washington used the Hasbrouck House in Newburgh as his headquarters from April 1782 to August 1783—his longest stay at any headquarters during the American Revolution. New York opened the preserved property to the public in 1850, making it the nation’s first publicly owned historic site.

A Working City in Transition

Newburgh’s docks, warehouses, factories, and transportation routes once made the waterfront a major center of activity. Today, historic preservation and new investment continue alongside the city’s working character and long-established neighborhoods.

The Orange County Choppers Connection

Ron and Michelle’s Newburgh stop centered on the former Orange County Choppers headquarters. That visit links their road-trip album to a modern chapter of Orange County history and one of the region’s most recognizable brands.
