For a few unforgettable minutes, the road belonged to an alligator. Ron and Michelle watched from a respectful distance as the complete story unfolded at Huntington Beach State Park.

The Approach
At Huntington Beach State Park, the wild does not need an invitation. It simply appears. We watched from a respectful distance as a powerful alligator left the marsh and approached the roadway—slow, deliberate and completely at home.
The Alligator Had the Right of Way
Traffic stopped. Cameras lifted. For a few unforgettable minutes, the road belonged to the alligator. People kept their distance and allowed this ancient resident to choose its own path.
Ancient Eyes
Through the camera lens, every scale, tooth and scar told a story older than any road through the marsh. Nothing was staged. This was a rare look at a creature perfectly built for survival.
Back to the Marsh
After crossing, the alligator moved back toward the wetlands. A wading bird stood in the distance—another resident of the same living landscape.
Back in the Water
Once it returned to the water, the scene changed fast. The alligator caught and ate a cormorant. Nature offered no rehearsal and no second take.
Then It Vanished
The alligator disappeared beneath the surface. Only ripples and bubbles remained. The water became quiet again—as if nothing had happened.
Dinner
Later, the alligator surfaced once more. In the water beside it were the remains of dinner. The entire story—crossing, hunt, disappearance and return—had unfolded right before our eyes.

This is why Michelle and I love volunteering at Huntington Beach State Park. You never know what the park will show you. If you remain patient, observant and respectful, you may witness a moment that becomes a story for the rest of your life. Life and nature at its finest.
