A Lowcountry city where naval history, industrial grit, riverfront renewal, arts, and modern growth meet.
Read the StoryA City That Turned Working History Into a New Waterfront
North Charleston’s story is closely tied to the naval base, shipyard trades, industry, and the Cooper River. Since the base closed, historic structures and former industrial land have become part of a growing city with parks, arts, events, and new technology.
A City Built Around Work and Service
North Charleston was incorporated in 1972, but its modern identity reaches back to the Charleston Naval Base and the generations of sailors, shipbuilders, welders, mechanics, and civilian employees who worked there.
The Naval Base Turning Point
The base opened in 1901 and closed in 1996. Its closure reshaped the local economy, but the city continued to preserve important buildings, landscapes, and memorials connected to the site’s military history.
Riverfront Park and Renewal
Riverfront Park opened to the public in 2005 on former naval-base property. The ten-acre Cooper River park combines waterfront views, walking paths, historic officers’ homes, memorials, public art, and major community events.
The R&M Connection
Ron and Michelle’s February 2021 visit focused on the Greater Charleston Naval Base Memorial. Their photographs connect North Charleston’s present-day riverfront to the people and work that shaped its past.
Location history was checked against official North Charleston tourism and Riverfront Park information. Original photographs remain credited to R&M Adventures.
